Since the commencement of their offensive in Afghanistan in May 2021, the Taliban have seized 18 provincial capitals in Afghanistan. 12 of these capitals were seized within one week and amongst these were two of Afghanistan's most prominent cities, Kandahar and Herat. Taliban forces have now infiltrated the Logar pronvince of Afghanistan, which is extremely close to the capital, Kabul.

Afghan civilians have thus been forced to flee their homes and reside in parks and stadiums in the nation's capital, Kabul. These individuals do not have access to basic necessities and are in dire need of humanitarian assistance ...

Those attempting to flee the nation and enter neighbouring countries have also faced difficulties. We therefore implore our Australian MPs to speak out for Afghanistan and provide it's civilians with the desperate assistance it requires for survival.

The Taliban has effectively seized the entirety of Afghanistan since the commencement of their offensive in May 2021.

In highlighting the exacerbated humanitarian crisis that has inevitably ensued, the following are examples from recent weeks of the disaster’s human toll:

1. Families have been forced to flee their homes. Many of these families have fled to the nation’s capital, Kabul, and are residing in parks and stadiums. Accordingly, vulnerable women, children and elderly citizens of Afghanistan are homeless and without basic supplies including food and water. 
2. The Taliban have forced Afghan women, as young as 15, to marry Taliban fighters. 
3. Homes have been looted by the Taliban and set on fire. 
4. Mass killings including the massacre of 200 civilians in Spin Boldak, Kandahar.

As a result of the above, the International Committee of the Red Cross recently declared Afghanistan amongst the deadliest places in the world. It is for this reason that since the beginning of 2021 close to 400,000 Afghans have been displaced. This figure does not include the unreported.

Accordingly, I write to you today and plead for you and your fellow MPs to break the silence on Afghanistan by voicing your support for Afghan civilians and elucidate Australia’s commitment to peace in Afghanistan. In terms of immediate assistance, I urge for you and your fellow MPs to please action and press for the Australian government to commit to the following as a matter of urgency:

1. Grant and distribute aid to Afghan civilians, particularly the following necessities which are urgently required:
o	Portable toilets 
o	Clean drinking water 
o	Medical assistance 
o	Food
o	Shelter 
o	Clothing and blankets
o	Baby formula and baby nappies

2. Assist in evacuating Afghan nationals that supported Australian forces during their mission in Afghanistan. These Afghan nationals would include but not be limited to interpreters and embassy workers. Such individuals and their families are in dire need of protection as they are actively being hunted by the Taliban for their sacrifices. By way of an example, in the Faryab province of Afghanistan in early August 2021, a 12-year-old boy was flogged by Taliban soldiers because of his father’s role as a soldier in Afghanistan’s national army.

3. Committing to an additional humanitarian intake of at least 20,000, similar to Canada's announcement on 14 August 2021 accepting 20,000 refugees from Afghanistan.

In addition, I urge for you and your fellow MPs to please attend to the following:

1. Protect Afghan nationals in Australia who are facing expiry of their temporary protection visas. A blanket extension of temporary visas for Afghan nationals is vital in ensuring protection from the current carnage.

2. Pressure Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries to keep their border crossings open for Afghans to flee to. Such border crossings include the Iranian-based Malik border crossing and the Pakistani-based Chaman-Spin Boldak.

3. Pressure the international community to also accept Afghan refugees.

The situation in Afghanistan is dire and requires the urgent attention of Australia and the international community. I implore you as my MP to please consider and action the above for the people of Afghanistan.
